Cinema Ost – Eastern Europe in the Mirror of Film | Opening | Audience discussion with director Gabrielė Urbonaitė

29-year-old Ilona and her boyfriend Matas have just moved into a new flat in an apartment block to start a life together. But the house needs to be renovated and the cracks in the wall are symbolic. The construction noise and the builders on the scaffolding outside her window disturb the journalist Ilona. Then she falls in love with the Ukrainian construction worker Oleg and her bourgeois notions of an idyllic life begin to crumble like the old plaster on the walls. She is insecure. Shortly before her 30th birthday, she asks herself what she really wants. Torn between the imprints of previous generations and the values of Western European modernity, she comes to a surprising and liberating realisation.

At the Nordic Film Days Lübeck, “Renovation” wins the Friends’ Award for the best feature film debut and the Church Film Award 2025
