Inspired by the Nouveau Roman, Alain Resnais skilfully interweaves layers of time and reality to create ambiguous, labyrinthine scenes of fascinating visual power.
During a party in a magnificent baroque castle, a man tries to convince a young woman that they have met before and that she has promised to leave another man. While he confronts her with fragmentary stories from the (fictitious/dreamed?) past, she struggles to remember. Resnais weaves layers of time and reality into a complicated system of mysterious references, parallels, hypotheses and contrasts. The film, inspired by modern French literature, provides a fascinating visual counterpart to the intricate structure of the content: the images, montages and locations are also labyrinthine, although at the same time they are subordinated to a strict, almost abstract concept. A sophisticated filmic reflection on the difficulty of objectifying impressions of reality. (Source: filmdienst)
The internationally successful Marienbad film not only had a formative influence on film directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Peter Greenaway, David Lynch and Lars von Trier, but also defined an understanding of art that had an impact on all artistic fields and is still current and relevant today.
