Annual theme – as part of the “Zappenduster” series in cooperation with Cinema & Kurbelkiste
Teenager Owen struggles through his life in the suburbs. One day, a classmate introduces him to the supernatural world of a mysterious late-night TV show. In the pale light of the television images, Owen’s perception of reality begins to crack.
The world premiere took place in January 2024 at the 40th Sundance Film Festival. The international premiere took place one month later as part of the 74th Berlinale.
An utterly beguiling film that is about nothing less than the question of who you want to be – or become. (Katja Wiederspahn)
The film has numerous bitter, abysmal moments. But when it shows how a series can connect two outsiders, moments of empowerment also flare up. In any case, I Saw the TV Glow proves that Jane Schoenbrun is a very promising voice in indie cinema. A voice that dares to speak for all those who for a long time only felt recognised in the subtext, rarely in the text of a narrative. (Kino-Zeit, Andreas Köhnemann)
