Annual Theme – with director Serap Berrakkarasu
The vegetables come from the garden behind the house, the fish comes from a tin, and the money for the bread comes from the factory – at a fish canning factory near Lübeck, the assembly line is staffed mainly by Turkish women. They talk about their lives, their worries, their grief, their hopes and dreams. They describe their longing for home and their sense of being lost in a foreign land.
Serap Berrakkarasu interviews female workers on the assembly lines and in the fish canning factories about their work and their lives. The Turkish women, with whom the filmmaker quickly establishes a rapport thanks to their shared Turkish language and their parents’ migration history, speak of the harsh conditions of their precarious wage labour.
