Open-air screening at the Rüschhaus with live poetry and live music
This breathtakingly beautiful fairy tale, based on motifs from *One Thousand and One Nights*, is the first feature-length animated film in the history of cinema. Its poetry and enchanting characters still make it a truly memorable experience. Over the course of three years, Lotte Reiniger wrote the storyboard, cut out the characters and backgrounds – and brought them to life. In total, around 250,000 individual frames were shot, 100,000 of which were used in the film.
This silhouette film tells the story of Prince Achmed’s adventurous journey, which begins at the court of the Great Caliph. On the day the Great Caliph’s birthday is being celebrated, a stranger appears in the city and presents his marvellous creation: a horse that can fly through the air…

Lotte Reiniger cut freehand whatever sprang to life in her imagination: flowers, animals, people, and creatures from fairy tales and fables.
