Annual theme — With protagonist Tina Adomako — Moderation: Barbara Kemmler, Afrikanische Perspektiven e.V.

The documentary film follows the German-Ghanaian family Adomako over a period of several decades. At a time when marriages between Africans and Europeans were still the great exception, Hanna Lamm from Wuppertal married her husband Joseph Adomako in the 1950s and followed him to the new Ghana a few years later, after the Gold Coast gained independence. There was no talk of migration back then. But the topic of migration has stayed with the family to this day.

Curated by Afrikanische Perspektiven e.V. – The association Afrikanische Perspektiven e.V. was founded in Münster in September 2020. The aim of the association is to cooperate with people and organisations from African countries and the diaspora, to promote mutual understanding and appreciation as well as knowledge and recognition of different perspectives.

At the beginning of the relationship, a mother in Ghana threatens to go on hunger strike because her son wants to marry a white woman. But as soon as the first grandchild arrives, all concerns disappear. On the contrary, the young family has to move quickly from England to Ghana so that the grandparents can see the grandchild regularly. On the German side, another mother is confronted with an “exotic” son-in-law. Long before WhatsApp and Skype, she has to come to terms with the fact that her daughter has left her home in Wuppertal for a very distant and foreign Africa, where a reunion will not be possible any time soon.

Together with documentary filmmaker Christoph Felder, I worked on this universal and at the same time very personal film over a period of almost 20 years. The idea germinated much earlier – almost 40 years ago, when I came to Germany from Ghana. Good things take time.

My family history begins in Africa and Europe. Today my family lives in England, Germany and Ghana, with storylines all the way to the USA. A story that spans generations and is as personal as it is universal. And a story that, although it began over sixty years ago, has lost none of its topicality to this day.

The film premiered simultaneously in New Zeeland and Dortmund on 30 October 2022.
