Cinema Ost – Eastern Europe in the mirror of film
In the North Ossetian mining town of Mizur, young Ada struggles against the suffocating confines of her home. While her older brother Akim has already escaped to Rostov, father Zaur keeps Ada and her younger brother Dakko trapped in a web of strict control. However, Ada’s secret escape plans are put to the test: When Akim returns, the family’s deep-seated, unprocessed traumas come to light and make it clear how difficult it is to really break the shackles of the father’s “embrace”.
“The idea that freedom is a burden was the most important theme for me while working on this film. This thought inevitably led me to think about the burden of memory and the connection between the two. Is it possible to endure freedom from memory?” (Kira Kovalenko)
