15 March to 29 March: cinema ost

The film festival Cinema Ost. Eastern Europe in the Mirror of Film is now in its fourth round. They have established themselves as a successful cultural project in Münster.

Under the motto RENOVATION – Renewal, Filmtage cinema ost is presenting six films from Lithuania, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia/Ossetia. A Czech film is also included this time, as 2026 is the year of Czech culture in Germany. This motto was inspired by the Lithuanian opening film Renovation. The film symbolises the renovation of a house that has become old, while at the same time the protagonist renovates her identity by freeing herself from outdated values. Something old can no longer withstand the changes of time and needs to be renovated. A highly topical theme that is expressed in the different narratives of the films. Renovation of the soul, of identity or the renovation of society. It can succeed with music, as in the film The Swan Song of Fedor Ozerov (with the supporting film No City, No Village) or in Everything Needs to Live with an impressive humanity. It fails when the old is more powerful than change, as in the film Waves, the awakening of the Prague Spring. The renewal of life can fail or succeed, in the end the tree of wishes remains.
