The filmclub münster is the oldest film club still in existence in Germany. It was founded in June 1948 in the vicinity of the university to promote cultural film and create a counterweight to commercial film. Supported by the Filmwerkstatt Münster, the Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe, the Westfälischer Kunstverein and Burg Hülshoff – Center for Literature, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the filmclub münster regularly organises thematic film series, which are presented in the Schloßtheater cinema and other venues.
- The open and respectful exchange about films, their creation, their backgrounds and their participants is at the centre of the work of the filmclub münster. The aim of the filmclub’s work is to create encounters and discussions in the spirit of democratic and caring cultural work. Respectful cooperation includes recognising different positions and the personal, cultural and political backgrounds of individuals.
- Discriminatory or abusive actions or statements and other forms of attacks and exclusion are therefore not tolerated. The organisers of filmclub münster will punish such incidents and are the contact persons for those affected by discrimination at the events. The organisers reserve the right to exercise their domiciliary rights and to deny access to or exclude from the event persons who belong to right-wing extremist parties or organisations, are associated with the right-wing extremist scene or have already made racist, nationalist, anti-Semitic, queer or misogynistic or other inhumane statements in the past.
- The organisers of filmclub münster, the invited guests and co-curators or initiatives will endeavour to select and contextualise films in a way that is sensitive to discrimination and diversity. Content notes and trigger warnings are shared digitally (website, social media) and verbally (events) before the films. Visitors are informed as specifically as possible about the ways in which a film contains disturbing content.
- The accessibility of the film programme and the premises is important to filmclub münster. The Schloßtheater Münster, the filmclub’s regular venue, is barrier-free for wheelchair users. However, aware that film in image and sound largely excludes visually impaired or blind and deaf people, the filmclub endeavours to clearly communicate barriers and will work on diversifying access in the future.
