About us

The Filmclub Münster is the oldest film club still in existence in Germany. It was founded in June 1948 at the Westfälische Wilhelms University in order to promote cultural film and create a counterweight to commercial film. Supported by the Filmwerkstatt Münster, the Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe, the Westfälischer Kunstverein and Burg Hülshoff – Center for Literature, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the filmclub münster regularly organises thematic film series, which are presented in the Schloßtheater cinema and other venues.

In 2026 , filmclub münster offers a programme full of new and rediscovered films, both small and large.

We once again asked our viewers to take part in the “Call for Curation” and numerous people from Münster contributed film ideas that became part of the filmclub programme.

As always, the annual theme is at the heart of the programme.

In the 2026 annual theme , we are showing films under the title“Borderless” that deal with border experiences and border crossings, that tell stories of departure and arrival, of loss, hope and belonging, of movements between countries, languages and realities of life. At the same time, we ask: What is possible in cinema, what is not (yet) possible in reality? Which images transcend borders, which overwrite history? Which cinematic forms break conventions – narrative, formal, institutional? Can we make other realities tangible in cinema, design new futures, think utopias?

In this year’s Filmplädoyer series, Alexander Scholz, director of the Duisburg Film Week, has selected a film that he considers important and will present it with a personal introduction. He also brings along two other excellent films from the rich Duisburg programme archive.

Films from the “Cinema Ost” programme as well as collaborations with the Visual Anthropology course, the “poetry” project for the International Poetry Meeting and a film evening to mark the 80th birthday of Dieter Fietzke, the long-standing head of the Film/Video/New Media Workshop at the Münster Academy of Art.

The 2021 annual theme was all about “Breakouts / Awakenings”, while the focus in 2022 was on “Lots of work”. In 2023, we presented films depicting social processes of discovery under the title “Re-Orientation”. In 2024 , under the heading “Anthropocinema”, we showed films that tell of the sometimes irreversible traces of mankind in the world, and in 2025 the focus was on“Friendship”.

We look forward to other films, other themes and other perspectives in 2026 with the filmclub münster!

Incidentally, we celebrated the 75-year history of the oldest still existing film club extensively in 2023 – and published a book on the history of the film club in Münster (and beyond): “Andere Blicke – 75 Jahre filmclub münster”.
